Stoke-on-Trent homes to implement £4.5m worth of energy efficiency measures

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is gearing up to implement an extensive makeover scheme across both council and private homes, aimed at significantly improving their level of energy efficiency and thus reduce overall energy-related costs.

The Council managed to secure the necessary funding for this project, worth an estimate £4.5m, from the Government’s ECO Go Early project, which, in its turn, uses funds obtained from the climate change levy every company in the UK has to pay.

According to a media news report on the matter, the Council believes that they’ll be able to start work on external wall insulation for 168 steel-framed houses, built in the 1940s and 50s as well as draft proofing and heating system improvements for some of the homes.

The aforementioned money will be used for installing new windows, doors and upgraded boilers “wherever they are needed”. Eight blocks of council flats will also get external insulation while three more will get a new roof and brand new ‘eco-glazing’ in their stairwell.

Andy Platt, City Council cabinet member for green enterprise, revealed that the city takes energy security “really seriously”, adding it has won and spent £31m on home energy upgrades for 38,000 homes since 2008 with “more to come” over the next decade.
