Energy efficiency measures drive UK energy consumption below 1965 levels
The UK has become the only country where energy usage has actually gone down over the past 50 years, newly released energy data from BP has been able to reveal.
Energy consumption has gone down by close to five per cent compared to 1965, despite peaking back in 2005, figures revealed. Consumption was down 6.3 per cent over the past year alone, with rising energy efficiency accounting for the majority of the fall.
The industrial sector has improved its efficiency most, data from the department of energy and climate change (DECC) shows.
The report from BP also found that the rise of energy consumption globally is slowing, increasing just 0.9 per cent in 2014, the weakest growth since 2009.
