The UK’s dairy industry attains major energy savings

Dairy U.K., the trade association for the British dairy supply chain, has recently said in a release that dairy processors, farmers and retailers across the country have made some key achievements in terms of energy savings.

The organization revealed that processors have recorded a 16 percent improvement in overall energy efficiency, exceeding the original target of 15 percent, noted the release. At the same time they have achieved a 15 percent reduction in relative water consumption.

An estimated 78 percent of dairy farmers are taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on their farms, stated the release. Farmers are also tacking water use: 78 percent have implemented water efficiency methods, going beyond the target of 70 percent.

Waste management has also improved considerably over the past seven years: Dairy processors now send only 4 percent of factory waste to landfill, down from 32 percent in 2008. Dairy U.K. said in the release that this was thanks to improved segregation of mixed waste and employee engagement activities, as well as greater use of energy from waste incineration and anaerobic digestion technology.

This proves once again the positive effects brought about by the deployment of energy saving technologies, such as the HeatingSave Building Energy Management System, which is designed to slash consumption levels by optimizing various parts of the heating process.

Building Energy Management Systems are capable of delivering extensive monitoring and control options, compared to basic controls. They typically employ data from a variety of sources (boiler flow and return sensors, internal and external temperature sensors, occupancy sensors, humidity sensors, etc.), and enable the perfect optimization of a building’s boiler-based central heating system.
