Big Six energy supplier loses further 200,000 customers

One of the UK’s Big Six energy suppliers has reportedly lost around 200,000 customers during what it describers as a „tough year”, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

Npower, which has around five million gas and electricity accounts, said its retail arm swung to a £48 million loss in the first nine months of the year from a £73 million profit a year ago.

It blamed customers using less energy, or switching to non-standard tariffs, as well as problems with its long-running IT billing system.

Chief executive of npower Paul Coffey said this year “continues to be very tough for npower’s domestic business”.

He added: “We have initiated a fundamental recovery programme in order to stabilise the business as early as possible whilst providing a more robust and effective operating basis to serve our customers in future.”
